DemDaily: Update on Elections! The Latest Results

June 10, 2025

Democrats prevailed in two southern mayoral contests last week, kicking off 2025's busiest month, with a half dozen major elections ahead in June.

In the June 3 Jackson, Mississippi mayors race, longtime State Senator John Horhn (D) swept the general election with 67.11% of the vote over Republican Kenny Gee and three Independent contenders to become the city's ninth consecutive African-American mayor.

Horhn, in his fourth attempt at running for mayor, won the Democratic nomination in the April 22 primary runoff, defeating two-term incumbent Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba (D) in a landslide 74.90%-25.10% victory. Lumumba and other officials were indicted in November 2024 on bribery and corruption charges.

Although most mayoral elections are officially nonpartisan, 65 mayors in the nation's most populous 100 cities are affiliated with the Democratic Party. Twenty-four are affiliated with the Republican Party, one with the Libertarian Party, two are Independents, four identify as nonpartisan or unaffiliated, and four mayors' affiliations are unknown.

In San Antonio, Texas, the country's seventh-largest city, former Undersecretary of the Air Force and two-time Democratic congressional candidate Gina Ortiz Jones defeated former Republican Texas Secretary of State and Texas Public Utility Commissioner Rolando Pablos in the June 7 mayoral runoff.

The two advanced from the closely watched May 3 general election with the top vote counts among 27 candidates vying to succeed incumbent Ronald Nirenberg (D), who is term-limited.

Jones defeated Pablos, a close ally of Texas Governor Greg Abbott and state GOP leaders, 54.3%-45.7% in the bitterly partisan runoff.

In a statement, the Democratic National Committee (DNC), which deployed 200 volunteers to the race -- reaching over 100,000 voters -- said, "This victory further extends a significant streak of Democratic overperformances and victories in competitive elections in 2025...While Republicans alienate working- and middle-class families, Democrats continue to build momentum, win elections, and offer an alternative to Republicans’ disastrous agenda."

Thanks to an initiative voters approved in November, this year’s mayor and City Council winners will be the first to serve four-year terms before they must seek reelection.

In the June 7 Garland, Texas mayoral runoff, Republican Dylan Hedrick narrowly defeated Democrat Deborah Morris, 51.7%-48.3%, with just 262 votes separating the two former city council members. Hedrick succeeds term-limited Mayor Scott LeMay (R).
