In one of the busiest primary nights of the cycle, voters in six states went to the polls Tuesday to pick their party's nominee in consequential primary contests in Kentucky, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Idaho and Oregon.
While President Donald Trump claimed primary victories in his war of vengeance against members of his own party who have dared to defy him, it may be at the cost of the Republican Party in general election match-ups -- particularly in swing states.
Similarly, although Trump's popularity among conservative voters may carry a primary, his record negatives among the larger populace can just as easily sink a general election contest.

Primary Results! Pennsylvania, Alabama, Idaho and Oregon
PENNSYLVANIA
Primary Elections: Governor, Lt. Governor, US House, State Senate, State House
Governor: Democratic governor Josh Shapiro and Republican state Treasurer Stacy Garrity, both of whom were uncontested in their party primaries, officially kicked off the general election for governor on Tuesday in the most crucial of presidential battleground states.
In the purple state that Biden won with 1.16% in 2020, and Trump flipped with 1.71% in 2024, federal and state representation is split among the parties. The GOP, however, has not won a Pennsylvania gubernatorial election since 2010.
Shapiro, who is frequently mentioned as a potential 2028 presidential contender, was first elected in 2022 with 56.5% of the vote to succeed term-limited Democrat Tom Wolf, and is among the country's most popular governors -- expected to easily win reelection.
Lt. Governor: incumbent Democrat Austin Davis is being challenged by attorney and 2022 gubernatorial candidate Jason Richey, who won the Republican nomination with 65.6%.
US House: Republicans hold seven of Pennsylvania's 10 US House congressional districts.
Democrats are targeting four competitive GOP-held districts in Pennsylvania as among their top pick-up opportunities, with each of Shapiro's endorsed candidates winning their primaries Tuesday night.
CD-1: Bucks County Board of Commissioners Bob Harvie (65.1%) won the nomination to challenge four-term GOP Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick in the increasingly blue district in the Philadelphia suburbs, which Kamala Harris narrowly carried in 2024. The First has a Cook Political Report Partisan Voting Index (PVI) of D+1.
CD-7: Retired firefighter Bob Brooks (41%) defeated three candidates in the Democratic primary to take on freshman Congressman Ryan Mackenzie in the swing Lehigh Valley district (PVI R+1).
CD-8: Shapiro also supported Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti, who was unopposed in the primary and will go head-to-head against first-term Congressman Rob Bresnahan in the northeastern Scranton-based swing district (PVI R+4)
CD-10: Former news anchor Janelle Stelson won the Democratic nomination to take on GOP Congressman Scott Perry in a battleground district that encompasses Harrisburg (PVI R+3).
| In a triumph for progressives, State Representative Chris Rabb won the Democratic nomination for Pennsylvania’s Third Congressional District to succeed five-term Congressman Dwight Evans (D). Rabb defeated (44.7%) moderate State Senator Sharif Street (29.2%), the party establishment's endorsed favorite, and physician Ala Stanford (24.1%), whom Evans supported. The Democratic primary, in one of the country's bluest seats (PVI D+40), was watched as a bellwether for the mood of the voters in the Keystone State. |
ALABAMA
Primary Elections: US Senate, US House, Governor, State Executive Offices, State Senate, State House, State Supreme Court, Appellate Courts, Municipal, School Board, Ballot Measures
US Senate: The Republican primary race to replace conservative Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor, is going to a June 16 runoff between First District Congressman Barry Moore (39.2%), whom Trump has endorsed, and former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson (25.6%). State Attorney General Steve Marshall trailed with 24.5% of the vote.
The contest for the Democratic nomination is also going to a runoff between attorney Everett Wess (39.6%) and small business owner Dakarai Larriett (29.1%).
Governor: Senator Tommy Tuberville, a former Auburn University football coach and Trump ally, swept the Republican primary 85.5% in the contest to succeed term-limited GOP Governor Kay Ivey.
Former Senator Doug Jones, who easily defeated five other contenders for the Democratic nomination with 78.6% of the vote. The general election will be a rematch of their 2020 election, when Tuberville unseated Jones.
US House: May 19 primary elections were held for just three of Alabama’s seven congressional districts (CDs: 3, 4 and 5), while primaries for CDs 1, 2, 6, and 7, which are being redrawn, are delayed until August 11.
IDAHO
Primary Elections: US Senate, US House, Governor, State Executive Offices, State Senate, State House, State Supreme Court, Appellate Courts, Municipal, School Board, Ballot Measures
US Senate: incumbent Republican Senator Jim Risch, who easily defeated minor primary opposition, is being challenged by community activist and candidate for federal office in 2022 and 2024, David Roth, who won the Democratic primary with 61.9% the vote.
Governor: Republican Senator Brad Little, who fended off seven primary challengers with 59% of the vote, will face attorney Terri Pickens, who won the Democratic primary with 61.4%.

OREGON
Primary Elections: US Senate, US House, Governor, State Executive Offices, State Senate, State House, State Supreme Court, Appellate Courts, Municipal, Ballot Measures
US Senate: The winner of the seven-candidate Republican primary to challenge three-term Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley has yet to be called. State Senator David Brock Smith is in the lead with 29.5% of the vote, followed by two-time Republican Senate nominee Jo Rae Perkins and Brent Barker.
Governor: Incumbent Governor Tina Kotek, who dispensed with nine minor primary challengers, won renomination with 83.9% of the vote.
In the comfortably blue Beaver State, Kotek is being challenged by Republican State Senator Christine Drazan in a rematch of their 2022 46.9%-43.5% race.
Next Up: June 2 primaries in California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota.
