DemDaily: The Top Ten

August 26th 2016

Republicans currently control the US House of Representatives - 247 seats to the Democrats' 186 (two vacancies in Pennsylvania 2nd CD and Hawaii 1st CD).

Despite a positive shift in the numbers, Democrats face a daunting challenge - they must win 30 GOP seats to take back the House.

The average cost of a winning Congressional campaign in 2012 was $1.6 Million, a 344% increase over the cost 25 years ago.

This pales, however, in comparison to to the amounts outside groups are spending on top House races.

The biggest investors are the House leadership groups - the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) the House Majority PAC (Dem) and the Congressional Leadership Fund (Rep).

Under Citizens United (January 21, 2010) the US Supreme Court, citing freedom of speech, prohibited the restriction of independent political expenditures by a nonprofit corporation.
