Paul Young (D), President and CEO of the Downtown Memphis Commission, triumphed in the October 5 Memphis, Tennessee mayoral general election, with 27.67% of the vote to defeat sixteen other candidates in the race to succeed Mayor Jim Strickland (D), who is term-limited.

Although a nonpartisan general election, Memphis, the 27th-largest city in the US, has elected a Democratic mayor since 1992. Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner came in second with 22.53%, followed by former five-term Memphis Mayor (1991-2009) Willie Herenton with 21.50%, Shelby County Commissioner Van Turner 21.26%, and 13 candidates under 3%.

In the October 10 Durham, North Carolina Mayoral Primary, City council member Leo Williams (D) and State Senator Mike Woodard (D) are headed to a November 7 general election. In the officially non-partisan election to succeed Mayor Elaine O'Neal (D), who chose not to seek re-election, Williams received 51.3% of the vote and Woodard secured 29%, followed by Durham City Council member DeDreana Freeman (D) with 14.1% of the vote, and five other candidates who came in under 3%.
