DemDaily: The 2026 Election Calendar: The Final Stretch

64 Days Out. Five States.
It has been a particularly tumultuous primary calendar -- upended by President Trump's unprecedented mid-decade redistricting war -- with date changes as recently as May.
With the November 3, 2026 midterm elections just nine weeks away, five states still have primary elections. In addition, three states and three territories allow for runoffs that could carry the 2026 election calendar through the middle of December.
Republicans currently control both chambers of the United States Congress. Thirty-five of the 100 US Senate seats are up for election, with Democrats defending 13 and Republicans defending 22 seats. With a 53-47 GOP majority, Democrats will need to flip a net four seats to retake the upper chamber.
| All 435 US House seats are up for election in 2026. With a 220-215 GOP majority, including two vacancies, Democrats will need to win a net three congressional districts to take control of the lower chamber. Nine House Special Elections have taken place during the 119th Congress, with two outstanding -- in Texas 23 (Gonzales/R) and Florida 20 (Cherfilus-McCormick/D). GOP governors in both states declined to set a special election date, leaving the November 3 election to decide the successors in each district. |

| Louisiana held a partial primary election on May 16. The primaries for the state's six US House seats, however, were postponed after the Supreme Court's April 29 ruling in Callais that the state's congressional map was unconstitutionally gerrymandered. To give the Republican legislature more time to draw a new map, GOP Governor Jeff Landry rescheduled the state's US House primary elections to November 3, and the general election to December 12, 2026. |
