Undaunted by decades of constitutional legal precedent and thousands of individual state laws, the courts have continued to pave the way for Donald Trump's tireless mid-decade redistricting war.
The most devastating impact came in recent weeks, in the wake of the April 29, 2026 US Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that gutted the last voting rights protections for racial minorities -- and majority-minority districts under the Voting Rights Act (VRA).
The decision legally boosted Trump's attempt to redraw political lines across the country, immediately upending congressional maps and the election calendar in half a dozen states -- even with the 2026 midterms just months away.
Multiple runoffs have been added to the election schedule as well. As always, DemList will keep you updated on the candidates, the primaries, and the consequences to the calendar as they unfold.

| Louisiana was scheduled to hold partisan primaries and runoffs for US House on May and June 2026, but they were postponed after the Supreme Court's April 29 ruling in Callais that the state's congressional map was unconstitutionally gerrymandered. To give the Republican legislature more time to draw a new map, GOP Governor Jeff Landry rescheduled the primary elections for the state's six US House districts to November 3, and the general election to December 12, 2026. |

| Eleven US House Special Elections have or will take place during the 119th Congress, with four still outstanding. Georgia's 13th CD (Scott/D) will take place July 28, and California's 14th (Swalwell/D) on August 18. Two remaining specials, for Texas' 23rd CD (Gonzales/R) and Florida's 20th CD (Cherfilus-McCormick/D), have yet to be scheduled. |
