Not surprisingly, at just six months out from the 2026 midterm elections, May brought unprecedented legal challenges and turbulent changes to the political calendar.
Twelve states held primaries and/or runoffs in the month of May, with significant consequences for November:

| Republicans control both chambers of Congress. With a 53-47 GOP majority in the Senate, Democrats will need to flip a net four seats to retake the Senate. With a 220-215 majority in the House, including five vacancies (3 D/2 R), Democrats need a net gain of three districts to win back the lower chamber. |
The most devastating impact came from the April 29, 2026 US Supreme Court ruling that struck down the last shred of antidiscrimination protections for majority-minority congressional districts under the Voting Rights Act (VRA). The decision boosted Trump's mid-decade redistricting war, upending maps and/or election dates in Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

| Louisiana was scheduled to hold partisan primaries and runoffs for US House on May 16 and June 27, 2026, respectively, but they were postponed after the US Supreme Court's April 29 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that the state's congressional map was unconstitutionally gerrymandered. To give the GOP-controlled legislature time to redraw the map, Governor Jeff Landry rescheduled the primary elections for the state's six US House districts to November 3, and the general election to December 12, 2026. |

| Thirteen US House Special Elections have or will take place during the 119th Congress. Primaries for the vacancies in California's First (LaMalfa/R) and 14th (Swalwell/D) Districts will be held June 2, and the special general election for Georgia's 13th CD (Scott/D) will take place July 28. Two remaining specials, for Texas' 23rd CD (Gonzales/R) and Florida's 20th CD (Cherfilus-McCormick/D), have yet to be scheduled. |
