DemDaily: The 2025 Election Calendar! and Mayoral Results
May 7, 2025
April kicked off the 2025 election calendar and, with it, the first barometer of the electorate's mood since Trump reclaimed the White House.
While Democrats have already secured high-profile victories at the outset, there is a full calendar ahead, including two gubernatorial races, at least two special elections for US congressional seats, and hundreds of mayoral, initiative, municipal, and local contests up in 40 states.
| Although most mayoral elections are officially nonpartisan, 65 mayors in the nation's most populous 100 cities are affiliated with the Democratic Party. Twenty-five are affiliated with the Republican Party, one with the Libertarian Party, two are Independents, four identify as nonpartisan or unaffiliated, and three mayors' affiliations are unknown. |
In the April 15 Oakland, California Mayoral Special Election, former Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D) defeated former City Councilor Loren Taylor, 52.70%-47.30%, to fill the remaining term of Mayor Sheng Thao, who was recalled in the November 2024 elections.
Longtime State Senator John Horhn (D) defeated incumbent Mayor Chokwe Antar Lum (D), who is facing bribery charges by the FBI, in a landslide 74.90%-25.10% victory in the April 22 Jackson, Mississippi Mayoral Primary Runoff. Democrats have held the office for 124 years, and the last eight mayors have been African-American men. Horhn will face Republican Kenny Gee in the June 3 general election.
In the May 3 Texas elections, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker was elected to a third term, fending off seven challengers with 66.54% of the vote.
The officially nonpartisan Garland, Texas Mayoral election is headed to a June 7 runoff between Democrat Deborah Morris (42%) and Republican Dylan Hedrick (33%), who emerged as the top two vote-getters among six candidates. Mayor Scott LeMay (R), first elected in 2019. was term-limited and not eligible for re-election.
Plano, Texas Mayor John Muns (R) was unopposed in his election to a second term.
In the May 3 San Antonio, Texas Mayoral General election, former Undersecretary of the Air Force and two-time congressional candidate Gina Ortiz Jones (D) and former Texas Secretary of State (appointed) and Texas Public Utility commissioner Rolando Pablos (R) are headed to a June 7 runoff election. They were the top two vote-getters, at 27% and 17% respectively, among 27 candidates vying to succeed incumbent Ronald Nirenberg (D), who is term-limited.
In yesterday's officially nonpartisan May 6 Cincinnati, Ohio Mayoral Primary, incumbent Aftab Pureval (D) and evangelical pastor and coffee shop owner Cory Bowman (R), the half-brother of Vice President JD Vance, advanced to the November 4 general election. In the top-two election, Pureval won 82.53% of the vote, with Bowman a distant second at 12.91%.
In Toledo, Ohio, Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz (D) and challenger and former city staffer Roberto Torres secured the top two spots to advance to the November general election. Kapszukiewicz received 53% of the vote; Torres, an independent, was the runner up, receiving 24% of the vote. Harold Harris (Ind) received 21% and write-in candidates received 112 votes.
