DemDaily: The 2025 Election Calendar. Updates!

September 5, 2025

Congress is back from Summer recess, and the countdown to the November 2025 elections has begun.

Although most mayoral elections are officially nonpartisan, 65 mayors in the nation's most populous 100 cities are affiliated with the Democratic Party. Twenty-five are affiliated with the Republican Party, one with the Libertarian Party, three are Independents, and seven identify as nonpartisan or unaffiliated.

AUGUST 2025
August advanced Democrats in four out of five major city mayoral elections!

In the open Detroit, Michigan Mayoral seat being vacated by three-term Democratic incumbent mayor Mike Duggan, who is running as an Independent for governor in 2026, Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield (D) secured 50.8% of the vote in the August 5 primary. Sheffield and Pastor Solomon Kinloch Jr. (17.4%) advance as top two vote-getters among nine candidates to move on to the November general election.

In the Lansing, Michigan Mayoral Primary, the top-two general election spots were secured by incumbent Andy Schor (63.38%) and Kelsea Hector (15.88%).

Democrats Katie Wilson (50.8%) and incumbent Bruce Harrell (41.2%) defeated six other candidates in the August 5 top-two Seattle, Washington Mayoral Primary to advance to the November general election.

A progressive turnout, which also benefited Seattle City Council candidates, is credited with Wilson's unexpected lead over Harrell.

In the open-seat mayoral election being vacated by Mike Padilla (D) in Topeka, Kansas, Republicans Spencer Duncan (60.2%) and Henry McClure (14.3%) advanced from the primary to the general election.

Birmingham, Alabama Mayor Randall Woodfin (D) sailed to a third term in the August 26 general election, fending off eight challengers with 75% of the vote.

The Democratic National Committee's Summer Meeting took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota August 24-27. Check out our wrap-up! DemDaily: The Big Tent Party
