DemDaily: The 2024 Presidential Primary Calendar! The Updates

February 27, 2024

We are now six weeks into the 2024 presidential primary season and one of the most consequential White House elections in history.

The purpose of a state primary election or caucus is not to directly elect the presidential nominee, but to determine, based on the percentage of the popular vote received by each candidate, how many state delegates that candidate is awarded to send to the party's national convention. The full body of delegates from each state then votes to elect their party's nominee at the convention.

Democratic primaries or caucuses have been held in: Iowa (beginning of mail-in-balloting), New Hampshire (unsanctioned primary), South Carolina and Nevada

Republican primaries or caucuses have been held in: Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, US Virgin Islands and South Carolina

Next Up: Michigan primaries today

The 2024 primary season began January 15 and ends with the last caucuses in the Guam and US Virgin Islands June 8. The Democratic Convention will be held August 19–22 in Chicago, Illinois and the Republican Convention will be held July 15–18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
