DemDaily: Rebellion!
June 16. 2025
More than 5 million people across the country took to the streets on Saturday to protest the unprecedented dismantling of our democracy by President Donald Trump -- as he reigned over an $45 million military parade and tribute to his 79th birthday in the nation's capital.
The No Kings protest -- a rebuke to Trump's authoritarian abuse of executive power and the Constitution -- was the largest single day of action since Trump was sworn in for a second term.
It also comes on the heels of Trump's deployment of the national guard to allegedly quell what were peaceful protests against the administration's immigration raids in Los Angeles. Trump publicly threatened to use the military might present at the parade against anyone who interfered with the event, which was officially celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the Army.

The events spanned over 2,100 peaceful demonstrations across all 50 states, DC, the US territories, and in more than 20 countries globally.
Americans from every state and sector of the population -- in blue states and red states -- showed up to voice their resistance, mobilized by Indivisible, ACLU, 50501 Movement (signifying 50 protests, 50 states, one movement) and 200 partner organizations.
The flagship No Kings Day rally was held in Philadelphia, the birthplace of the Constitution, instead of Washington, because "the real power isn’t staged in Washington. It rises up everywhere else."
Constitutional scholar and Maryland Congressman Jaime Raskin, speaking in Philadelphia, said, "Are you ready to fight back? Do you want a gangster state or do you want free speech in America?
He warned that America stands at “the edge of authoritarianism under the former -- and now current -- president...We did not overthrow a king in 1776 just to crown a tyrant in 2025. Donald Trump doesn’t want to be a president, he wants to be an autocrat. He wants obedience, not oversight. But we’re not subjects -- we’re citizens.” Of Trump’s recent crackdown and arrests during the LA immigration resistance, he said, “When the government starts jailing peaceful protesters and calling Americans ‘enemies,’ that’s not law and order -- that’s despotism in disguise.” He concluded, “No one is above the law. Not kings, not billionaires, and not presidents who dream of both.”
