'Twas the week of Christmas
as the last members left the Capitol Chambers,
having completed the work of Congress
as set forth by the Framers.
The great Halls would go silent,
with the House and Senate on recess,
granted a short reprieve
from the endless strife and stress.
Candidates were home
all snug in their beds,
with visions of next year's primaries
dancing in their heads.
For the voters a respite,
until the new election year,
when the battles begin anew
the lines already clear.
Trump and his Cabinet of evil elves,
head Santa's naughty list,
conspiring and plotting
against those who resist.
Hedspeth, Bondi and Patel
get only coal for their schemes,
While the Ghost of Epstein
haunts Trump's dreams.
The battle for the soul
of our nation, it appears,
is still playing out
in division and fear,
Over what defines
the American way,
and whether Democracy
will rule the day.
May we all be grateful
for the gift of voice,
that we live in a country
where we have a choice.
So before we go back
to our partisan ways,
may peace and compassion
guide your days.
Until January 2nd then,
when we begin a new year,
We bid you rest,
reflection and good cheer.
