DemDaily: May Day: Call To Action

April 29, 2025

National Week of Action
Millions of Americans this week are protesting the administration of Donald Trump as the President marks his 100th day in office.

The May Day call to action is one of many protests over the last four months that have mobilized working people from every sector of the population. That includes Independents and Republicans who are falling victim to the ever-expanding, unprecedented dismantling of our democracy by Trump and his chief hatchet man, billionaire Elon Musk.

The history of May Day is rooted in resistance as a commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket Riot -- a pivotal event in the fight for workers' rights. Chicago became the center of the movement as workers went on strike to demand an eight-hour workday. May 1 is officially recognized as International Workers Day in much of the world, but not in the United States.

Organizers announced that over 70,000 workers, immigrants, students, and families will rally in a growing list of more than 1,000 events in cities across all 50 states, DC nd the US territories -- to protest the "Billionaire Agenda."

A coalition of close to 200 national and state partner organizations, alliances and labor unions are behind the rallies, marches, town halls, walkouts and other actions -- to demand a country that puts our families over their fortunes, public schools over private profits, healthcare over hedge funds, and prosperity over free market politics.

The May Day protests build upon the recent April 5th Hands Off nationwide event against federal layoffs, Trump’s sweeping anti-immigrant crackdown and abductions, and the blatant corruption of the Trump administration, which brought over 5 million people into the streets.
