DemDaily: DNC Announces 2028 Convention City Finalists!

August 28, 2026

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced the three cities in final contention to host its 2028 Presidential Nominating Convention, scheduled for August 7-10, 2028.

Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia made the final cut in the high-stakes political and economic contest to nominate the party's presidential candidate and kick off the three-month general election path to the White House!

Atlanta and Chicago, which were among the original five-city shortlist announced by the DNC in March, have been eliminated.

The "Super Bowl of Politics," the Democratic National Convention is the formal event, held every four years, in which Party delegates and members convene to choose their nominees for President and Vice President and to adopt the official Party Platform. It is the largest single gathering of Party leaders and influencers -- an unparalleled experience and opportunity to connect with the people and players who are shaping the future of our Party and the country.

The Host City
The winning City, which will host over 50,000 delegates, elected and party officials, donors, activists, lobbyists, labor leaders, celebrities, media, and volunteers over the four-day convention, is expected to see an economic infusion of $400+ million into the region.

The city's formal Host Committee is responsible for raising the estimated $100 million to organize and "promote commerce in the convention location and project a favorable image of the city."

That budget includes rental of the convention venue and all related convention-hall internal build-out, local law enforcement support, convention bureau/housing services, discounted hotel blocks, hospitality for party committees, and local transportation services, including buses and automobiles -- as well as all welcome city events and visitor resources, For 2028, the federal government is expected to pitch in approximately $75 million in security spending.

The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC)
The city host committee will work in close partnership with the DNCC, a team of experienced politicos responsible for conducting the day-to-day convention operations, politics and public engagement, credentialing, site operations, media and vendor relations.

Most significantly, the DNCC is charged with producing the convention program itself -- stage and script, speakers and logistics, floor proceedings, the roll call, and the "made-for-TV" event. Approximately 35 million convention watchers are expected to tune in nightly by television or online.

The Process
Although the convention may be two years away, the lengthy and complex process for choosing the host city has been formally underway since September 2025, when the DNC began soliciting requests for proposals from interested cities.

While the essential political, geographic, and demographic factors of importance to the 2028 presidential election immediately narrow the field, a city's ability to fundraise is a critical requirement. Similarly, a city's relationship with organized labor and the availability of union hotels and facilities can also immediately eliminate or elevate a contender.

Then there are the very real practical considerations of accommodating an event of this magnitude, including security, transportation, housing, logistics and operational capacity that further refine the selection.

DNC leadership and the party’s Technical Advisory Group conducted site visits in April and May to assess all factors. All five original cities have hosted the convention in the past -- most recently Chicago, in 2024. Philadelphia hosted in 2016, Denver in 2008, Boston in 2004, and Atlanta in 1988.

The three final cities are liberal strongholds surrounded by suburban areas of political demographic importance to the party. While Colorado and Massachusetts are considered reliable blue states in presidential elections, Pennsylvania is a marquee battleground state crucial to winning back the White House.

The process is now in the hands of the DNCC and party leaders who are expected to make a final decision on the Convention City by the end of 2026.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) this week announced its choice of Houston as the site of its 2028 convention, which will take place following the Democratic Convention, with a date yet to be determined.
