DemDaily: Countdown to the Convention

May 13, 2024

Saturday kicked off the 100-day countdown to the August 19-22 Democratic National Convention -- when 50,000 people will descend on Chicago, Illinois to renominate President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for a second term!

Visitors will include 4,687 Delegates from 57 delegations, national and state elected and party officials, allies, activists, donors, labor leaders and celebrities, along with 15,000 members of the media and 12,000 volunteers.

Through hundreds of official and unofficial events and four nights of exciting floor activity, including speeches, spectacular presentations and adoption of the Party's platform, convention-goers will celebrate the story of the Biden-Harris Administration -- while some 35 million viewers worldwide tune in nightly by television or online.

The start of the 100-day sprint to the convention marks a proud milestone for the more than 100 staff and thousands of volunteers who have been building the $85 million operation since the Midwestern city was chosen as host in April 2023.

Illinois plays a critical role as part of the region's "blue wall" states -- including Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota -- all essential to winning the 2024 presidential election. With a population of 2.7 million, Chicago is the nation's third-largest city, as well as one of its most diverse, with strong roots in the labor movement. The "Windy City" has hosted 25 national political conventions since 1860 -- more than any other city in US history.

On Friday, the 2024 Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) unveiled its revamped website, DemConvention.com, a dynamic and user-friendly platform that connects convention participants and spectators to news, updates and key resources -- from transportation and housing to programming and public safety.

Chicago's United Center, which holds 23,000, will serve as the main venue for the evening convention proceedings while McCormick Place will host daytime party affairs activities, including standing committees, councils, caucuses and smaller events.

All plans are closely coordinated with the Chicago Host Committee, City of Chicago, State of Illinois, and Biden for President campaign.

To commemorate the 100-day milestone, the 2024 Chicago Host Committee, in coordination with Chicago Cares, launched a Chicago Civic Action Week on Saturday, a week-long series of 20 volunteer service projects across nine neighborhoods throughout the city.

Speaking from the historic Pullman neighborhood, Host Committee Executive Director Christy George thanked the "80 different neighborhood ambassadors representing our 77 community areas as well as 23 of our surrounding suburbs."

The Host Committee serves as a vital partner to the DNCC and is responsible for raising $85 million of the funds needed to put on the convention (the federal government is providing an additional $50 million for security).

The Committee is working with prominent business and local leaders to ensure that the Chicago community experiences the maximum benefit of the convention. The convention is expected to infuse $150 million into the region's economy.

“100 days from today, the eyes of the world will turn to Chicago as Democrats from across the country gather to renominate President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris...[celebrate] the Biden-Harris administration’s historic track record of accomplishments, their vision for the next four years, and set the stage for what’s at stake this November. Together, we will bring the story of our party and our president to the American people – a story of progress, unity, and possibilities." - DNC Chair Jaime Harrison & DNCC Chair Minyon Moore
