DemDaily: Countdown to the Convention. Updates!
August 6, 2020
With just 11 days left until the start of the 2020 Democratic Convention, the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) announced yesterday that future nominee Joe Biden will not be delivering his presidential acceptance speech from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The announcement, driven by the advice of public health officials, comes as close to 4.9 million US citizens have been sickened by the coronavirus pandemic, and nearly 160,000 have lost their lives.
"2020 will always be remembered as a year of once-in-a-lifetime challenges and changes - but it will also be remembered as a time when Americans were their most compassionate and resilient selves...protecting the health of our host community and everyone involved with this convention must be paramount." -- Joe Solmonese, CEO of the 2020 Democratic National Convention

While the decision means other speakers will not travel to Milwaukee as well, viewers can still expect to see them beamed in live in what will be a truly unprecedented show.

The virtual "Convention Across America," broadcast August 17-20th, will offer four nights of programming which will include a mix of both pre-recorded segments and live broadcasts from locations across the country.
Led by an Emmy-award winning producer, each night's program will "celebrate the promise of America by featuring the people and their stories that represent the strength and collective humanity of our nation."
The usual six-hour daily program of speakers, party business and performances has been shortened to two hours with a theme for each night.
Official party business normally conducted at the convention, including voting on the Party Platform and the reports of the Convention Rules and Credentials Committees, are being conducted virtually by delegates between August 3rd and August 15th. |
Like previous conventions, each day will start, between 8:00am-11:00am with state delegation breakfasts and meetings, held virtually or in-person in each respective state and time zone. A number of state parties are also holding daily lunches.

DNC Councils, which represent certain communities and are organized around an issue or cause, include: Disability, Environmental and Climate Crisis, Labor, Interfaith, Vets & Military Families, Rural, Small Business, Ethics, Youth & Seniors.
The "pre-gavel" or pre-convention festivities will start an hour before the formal convention program, and will incude one or more speakers appearing nightly from a swing state, including Wisconsin, as well as "plenty of the next generation of leaders."
The main program will run from 9:00pm-11:00pm EDT each night. The rumored lineup is Monday night will feature former first lady Michelle Obama and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders speaking. Dr. Jill Biden is expected to deliver remarks on the second night, when presidential candidate nominating and seconding speeches are set to take place. Former President Barack Obama will also be a part of the program.
The vice presidential nominee, expected to be named next week, is slated to speak on the third night, and finally Joe Biden's acceptance speech on the final night of the convention.
