DemDaily: 2024 Presidential Primary Calendar! The Updates

We are now more than halfway through the presidential primary calendar; just 131 days out from the August 19–22, 2024 Democratic Convention in Chicago, Illinois; and 209 days until Americans will vote to reelect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for a second term!

The 2024 primary season began with the January 15 Iowa Caucus and ends with the Democratic caucuses in Guam and US Virgin Islands June 8. Presumptive party nominees Biden and former Republican President Donald Trump surpassed their respective party delegate thresholds to reach the nomination after the March 5 Super Tuesday primaries.

April 23: Pennsylvania Democratic and Republican Primaries

May 7: Indiana Democratic and Republican Primaries

May 14: Maryland, Nebraska, and West Virginia Democratic Primaries

May 21: Kentucky and Oregon Democratic Primaries
May 21: Kentucky and Oregon Republican Primaries

May 23: Idaho Democratic Presidential Caucus

May 24–26: Libertarian National Convention, Washington, DC

JUNE 2024
June 4: District of Columbia Democratic Presidential Primary
June 4: New Jersey Democratic and Republican Presidential Primaries
June 4: New Mexico, Democratic and Republican Primaries
June 4: Montana Democratic and Republican Presidential Primaries
June 4: South Dakota Democratic and Republican Presidential Primaries

June 8: Guam Democratic Presidential Caucus
June 8: US Virgin Islands Democratic Caucus

Democratic and Republican primaries or caucuses have been held in Alabama, Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Northern Mariana Islands, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin, along with Democrats Abroad’s global primary. Republicans have also held primaries in Guam, Idaho, DC, and the US Virgin Islands.

JULY 2024
July 11-14: Green Party Presidential Nominating Convention, Virtual

July 15–18: Republican National Convention
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

August 19–22: Democratic National Convention
Chicago, Illinois

September 16: First General Election Presidential Debate, San Marcos, Texas. Texas State University
September 25: Vice Presidential Debate, Easton, Pennsylvania. Lafayette College

October 1
: Second General Election Presidential Debate
Petersburg, Virginia. Virginia State University (TBC)

October 9: Third General Election Presidential Debate
Salt Lake City, Utah. University of Utah (TBC)

November 5Election Day

December 11: "Safe Harbor" Deadline (at least six days prior to the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December) under the Electoral Count Act, when states must finally resolve any controversies over the selection of their electors of the Electoral College.

December 17: State Electors Meet (the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December), in their respective state capitals and the District of Columbia to formally vote for president and vice president.

January 6: Electoral votes are formally counted before a joint session of Congress; the President of the Senate officially announces the electoral result.

January 20: Inauguration Day!
